Takamatsu built this harbor as a redevelopment of its old port district in the 1990s, and it now runs some of the busiest short-haul ferry routes in the Seto Inland Sea, boats that reach nearby islands in under an hour. Those same waters have quietly become an art destination since the 2010s, as the Setouchi Triennale drew visitors island-hopping to see contemporary art installed in old fishing villages and abandoned schoolhouses. Watch a ferry pull away from the pier, and it may be headed toward exactly that kind of island, one where the boat itself is still the only way in.
