Naha Airport is the busiest in the Okinawa island chain and serves both civilian flights and a Japan Self-Defense Forces base that shares the runway. The airport's location on a coastal strip means crosswinds from the East China Sea are a routine operational factor, and the approach path takes aircraft over the city before descending to the runway. Okinawa was under American administration until 1972, and the airport's international terminal dates from that period, originally serving flights to Taipei and Seoul before the reversion.
