The Yui Rail, Okinawa's monorail, opened in 2003 as the first rail transit in the prefecture, which had none during its decades under American administration. The Kenchomae station sits in front of the prefectural government building, and the area was the administrative center of the Ryukyu Kingdom before it was annexed by Japan in 1879. The street below the elevated tracks follows the route of what was once the main road of Naha, a city that was almost entirely destroyed in the 1945 battle and rebuilt on a new grid. Watch the monorail pass overhead and the street below it carries the same function it always has, moving people through the center of the island's capital.
